- Big Big news....coming soon will be something I've always wanted people to hear, the integrated amp from Brinkmann. It is hands down one of the most gorgeous pieces of hifi gear. The first time I saw one in person was like viewing a large precious gem for the first time. Pictures don't do it justice. You'll just have to come see and hear this piece when it gets here. I may have to provide a fainting couch for some.
-The Wax Engine turntable continues to make fans- and sales! I have noticed some erroneous forum chat out there. Let me elaborate quickly.
The table is made by Opera Audio of China, for their Consonance division of audio gear.
There has been a very successful Opera table in China much like this in production for a while. The good people of WTL, who have their tables made by Opera, modified the basic table and gave it even more special qualities. They swapped the carbon fibre tonearm for an aluminum one, which is always an improvement, to these ears, and made other modifications.
The tonearm is a 9" unipivot design, using a brass bearing in the horizontal mode and a stainless in the vertical, not your traditional needle point. VTA is adjustable via a side screw in the base. The cartridge overhang is set at 16mm. Antiskate is achieved by an arm and rider weight.
The 3 hemispherical feet are adjustable. The motor power supply is a 12V DC with adaptor.
There is no mat, yet further improvements can come from an Auditorium A23 mat.
I've already gotten a bit of forum spew for my earlier blog posts on the Wax Engine. And sadly, from a poster who hasn't heard the table. Such are the forums. I'll say at this point of listening to the Wax Engine, it's even better musically than I thought. And yes, the Regas still sound mechanical, the Pro-jects still bore compared to the Wax Engine. The Wax Engine has the ability to finagle more music out of my records than I've heard possible before at anywhere near it's price range of $995. It has pace and rhythm, it has taut bass lines, it elicits a midrange of subtleties, shades of tones, that only my favorite tables have. Clearly the good folks at WTL worked wonders on the stock version, and I love it.
Simply come and hear it, better yet, bring your table along even, and we'll listen as long as you want. I can't quit grabbing for the next record. It'll be fun.
